Multiple choice

I’ve already made up my mind.

The Government has indicated that wearing face coverings, including on public transport, will become a matter of “personal choice” when the final Covid restrictions in England are lifted, most likely in the next few weeks.

Health minister Helen Whately told Sky News: “We are going to be asking people much more to take personal responsibility for choices like that.”

She added: “I know, like many others, I can’t wait to not have to wear a mask, but I will be cautious and try and make the right judgements and follow guidance on this.”

I too can’t wait not to have to wear a mask. As I’ve written before, I find them uncomfortable, particularly on long train journeys.

But my “personal choice” is to continue to wear them when travelling on trains and when in close proximity to others.

In fact, I find it more uncomfortable to be near people without wearing face coverings – don’t get me started on those who wear them under their chin or beneath their nose – and those who are less than 1m-plus away than to have a restriction on my free breathing.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is among those calling on the Prime Minister to keep the wearing of face coverings on public transport mandatory after the easing of restrictions.

I had an uncomfortable experience the other day at a station cafe when I was ordering a coffee and two people without face coverings who were next in line came right up to where I was standing and started looking at the various cakes behind the glass.

I have to admit I was less than polite in reminding them of the need for social distancing!

It seems the current rules aren’t followed and aren’t sufficiently strictly enforced so I can understand the reason for ending the mandatory wearing of face coverings.

But I hope you’ll respect my decision to continue to wear them on trains just as I will respect your decision not to wear one – just as long as you keep your distance.
