One door closes …

It’s six months since my corporate life came to an end when my post was made redundant. It’s also six months since I started blogging.

Today also happens to be New Year’s Day so it’s as good a day as any to take stock.

I feel a lot happier mentally than I did six months ago. I’ve carried out a little paid freelance work and I’ve done a lot of unpaid but rewarding volunteering including as a company director for a non-profit heritage railway.

That’s the train of events which has led me to where I am today.

Five things I don’t miss from the corporate world

Commuting

Meetings

Office politics

Lunch at my desk

Swipe-open doors which don’t open on swiping

Five things I do miss from the corporate world

Talking to colleagues

Learning from other people

Being inspired by others

Having an IT department on hand

A regular and reliable salary each month

Five things I no longer worry about

Staff rotas

Getting everything done on my To Do list every day

Career status

Holiday timing

Job security

Five things I now worry about

The future of work for people of all ages

Whether I’m taking enough time to embrace this new way of life

Doing too much

Doing too little

Whether I should be blogging more often

Five things to do this year

Have a change of scene to write this blog in a coffee shop or library rather than at home

Sign up for formal learning courses

Write more about train travel

Enjoy the here and now

Stop making lists of “Five things”.

Happy New Year.
